There has never been more choice when it comes to booking a holiday.
You can compare hundreds of hotels, check flight times, read reviews from around the world and build an itinerary without speaking to anyone. In many cases, that works perfectly well.
So do you really need a personal travel planner in 2026?
The honest answer is: not always.
If you are booking a straightforward city break and enjoy doing your own research, online booking tools may be all you need. But when your holiday involves several moving parts, specific requirements or a significant amount of money, having one person to listen, research and support you can make a real difference.
That is where an independent travel consultant can help.
THE SHORT ANSWER
It depends on the holiday : and on how much you want to manage yourself
A personal travel planner is not there to make every decision for you. I am there to make the process clearer, reduce the amount of searching and help you feel confident about what you are booking.
You might benefit from personal support if:
- You are planning a family holiday with particular needs
- You are booking a honeymoon or anniversary trip
- You are considering your first cruise
- You are combining flights, hotels, transfers and excursions
- You are arranging a long-haul or multi-destination journey
- You do not have time to compare every option yourself
- You want someone you can contact if plans change
You may not need a planner for a simple, familiar trip that you already understand and enjoy arranging yourself.
There is no right or wrong approach. The important thing is choosing the option that suits you.

WHY “JUST BOOK IT ONLINE” IS NOT ALWAYS SIMPLE
Online booking has made travel more accessible. It has also made choosing more complicated.
You might begin by searching for a family holiday and quickly find:
- Dozens of resorts in different locations
- Several room types at each property
- Multiple flight combinations
- Different transfer options
- Conflicting customer reviews
- Prices that change depending on what is included
- Extra costs for baggage, seats, meals or transfers
After a few hours, you may have more information than when you started, but still not know which option is the best fit.
The issue is not a lack of choice. It is knowing which details matter most for your holiday.
A low-priced hotel may not be suitable if the transfer takes two hours with young children. A well-reviewed resort may not have the room configuration your family needs. A flight that looks convenient may arrive too late for a child-friendly bedtime.
These details are easy to overlook when you are comparing several websites at once.
WHAT DOES A PERSONAL TRAVEL PLANNER ACTUALLY DO?
A personal travel planner or independent travel consultant should do more than send you a generic list of holidays.
The process should begin with questions.
I will want to understand your dates, budget, departure airport and the kind of experience you are hoping for. I may also ask about things such as:
- Who is travelling and their ages
- Preferred flight times
- Room requirements
- How far you are comfortable travelling from the airport
- Whether you want a quiet resort or plenty of activities
- Your preferred pace for a touring holiday
- Any concerns you have about the destination or booking process
You do not need to have every answer ready. Even an initial idea such as “somewhere warm for a family of four in August” is enough to start.
From there, I research the options and narrow them down. Rather than sending you hundreds of possibilities, I can present a more manageable shortlist based on what you have told me.
That makes it easier to compare the things that genuinely matter.
THE VALUE IS IN THE DETAILS
Personal travel planning is often most useful in the small decisions.
For a family, that could mean finding sensible flight times, a room with proper sleeping arrangements and a resort where the children’s facilities are close to the accommodation.
For a couple, it might mean choosing a quieter part of a resort, arranging a private transfer or finding a hotel that feels special without using the entire budget on the room.
For a cruise, there are different questions to work through. Which cruise line suits your style? Would you prefer an inside cabin, an ocean-view room or a balcony? Is the departure port practical? Would a pre-cruise hotel make the journey easier?
My cruise planning service is designed to help with exactly these decisions. You do not need to understand cruise terminology before you get in touch.
The same applies to family holidays, romantic getaways, city breaks and long-haul trips.
A WIDER CHOICE, WITHOUT THE OVERWHELM
As an independent travel consultant, I have access to more than 250 suppliers through established travel infrastructure.
That does not mean I will send you every available holiday.
More choice is only useful when it helps you find the right option. My role is to use that wider network to research suitable possibilities, then filter them around your priorities.
You deal directly with me from the first conversation through to booking and beyond. There is no call centre to explain your requirements to repeatedly and no need to start again with a different person each time you have a question.
That continuity is a practical benefit.
I know what we have discussed, what you liked about one option and what ruled out another. If something needs clarifying, I can ask rather than guess.

WHAT HAPPENS IF SOMETHING CHANGES?
This is one of the main reasons people choose a personal travel planner.
Most holidays go ahead without any problems. But flights can be rescheduled, suppliers can change their arrangements and unexpected issues can arise before or during a trip.
When you book separate elements yourself, you may need to contact several companies and work out who is responsible for what.
With a personal consultant, you have a clear point of contact. I can help you understand the options, communicate with suppliers where appropriate and guide you through the next steps.
This does not mean every change can be avoided or every request can be accepted. Airlines, hotels, cruise lines and tour operators all have their own terms. Those terms still apply, and I will explain the relevant conditions before you book.
It simply means you do not have to work through every question alone.
WHAT ABOUT FINANCIAL PROTECTION?
Financial protection depends on the type of travel arrangement and how it is booked. It is not automatically attached to every holiday sold online or through an agent.
At Simply Journeys, the applicable protection is explained before payment is taken.
Simply Journeys by David is a member of Your Travel Consultant Ltd and protected by Protected Trust Services. Eligible flight-inclusive packages are covered by ATOL, and the relevant ATOL information and certificate should be provided when applicable.
You can also find general information about ATOL through the Civil Aviation Authority.
It is important to check what protection applies to your particular booking. Not every travel service is ATOL protected, and the protection may differ between a package holiday and separately booked arrangements.
I will provide the relevant information with your quotation and before you confirm your holiday. You can also review the booking information or ask me any questions before paying.
WHEN DIY BOOKING MAY BE THE RIGHT CHOICE
A personal travel planner is not the right answer for everyone.
Booking independently may suit you if:
- You are arranging a simple one-city break
- You already know the hotel and flights you want
- You enjoy comparing options and reading the details
- You are comfortable managing changes yourself
- You are booking directly with a supplier whose terms you understand
There is nothing wrong with taking that approach.
The value of an independent consultant becomes clearer when the booking is more involved, the holiday is especially important or you simply do not want to spend your evenings managing tabs, reviews and small-print conditions.
WHEN PERSONAL PLANNING IS LIKELY TO HELP MOST
You may find a personal travel planner particularly useful when:
You are travelling as a family
Family travel involves more than finding a hotel with a swimming pool. Flight times, room layouts, transfers, children’s facilities and meal arrangements can all affect how relaxed the holiday feels.
You are booking a special occasion
A honeymoon, milestone birthday or anniversary deserves careful planning. I can help you compare the details and make sure the arrangements reflect what matters to you.
You are considering a cruise
Cruise lines, ships, cabins and itineraries can feel confusing at first. Talking through the options can make the decision much easier.
You are planning a complex trip
Multi-city holidays, long-haul journeys and fly-cruise arrangements often involve several connected bookings. Having one person review the overall plan can help identify practical problems early.
You feel overwhelmed
This is reason enough.
You do not have to prove that your holiday is complicated before asking for help. If you have reached the point where every option is beginning to look the same, a conversation can bring some clarity.
SO, DO YOU NEED A PERSONAL TRAVEL PLANNER IN 2026?
You do not need one for every holiday.
But online tools have not removed the value of human judgement. They have made it easier to find options. They have not necessarily made it easier to decide which option is right for you, understand the conditions or deal with changes later.
A good bespoke travel agency UK service should feel personal, practical and easy to understand.
At Simply Journeys, that means you speak directly with me. I will listen to what you have in mind, review the options available through more than 250 suppliers and create a shortlist based on your needs.
I will pay attention to the details that can shape your experience, from flight times and room configurations to transfer lengths and the type of support included.
You do not need a finished itinerary. You do not need to know exactly where you want to go.
Simply tell me what you know so far, and we can work through the rest together.
Start your holiday enquiry or visit the Simply Journeys about page to find out more about how I work.
Your holiday can be complicated. Arranging it should not be.
