No-Fly Cruises from the UK: Why 2026/27 Is the Year to Set Sail from Southampton

If you like the idea of a cruise but would rather avoid airports, long waits and the stress of travelling with children, a no-fly cruise from Southampton could be a very good fit for 2026/27.

You can drive or take the train to the port, board your ship and start your holiday without a flight. For many families, that makes the whole experience feel simpler from the outset.

There is also plenty to look forward to onboard. Royal Caribbean has Liberty of the Seas sailing from Southampton in 2026, followed by Freedom of the Seas in 2027. MSC is bringing MSC Meraviglia to Southampton for the first time in summer 2027, while MSC Virtuosa and MSC Preziosa offer further options across the 2026/27 season.

The choice is growing. But so is demand, particularly for family cabins during school holidays.

Why no-fly cruises work so well for families

A family holiday often begins with a very early start, a busy airport and several hours of travelling before the holiday has really begun.

A no-fly cruise changes that.

You can:

  • Avoid airport queues and flight delays
  • Pack without worrying about airline baggage limits
  • Travel together by car or train
  • Arrive at one UK departure port
  • Unpack once and settle into your cabin
  • Enjoy the ship as part of the holiday, rather than treating travel as something to get through

Southampton is especially convenient for many UK families. It has several cruise terminals and regular departures from major cruise lines. The exact terminal depends on your sailing, so it is important to check your booking documents rather than relying on the cruise line alone. The Southampton VTS cruise schedule also explains that terminal information can change and should be confirmed close to departure.

For families travelling from further away, I can also help you consider whether an overnight stay near Southampton would make the journey more comfortable.

What is new for 2026/27?

The most interesting developments are not all brand-new ships in the traditional sense. Some are newly refurbished ships, while others are new to Southampton or returning with fresh itineraries.

Royal Caribbean: Liberty of the Seas in 2026

Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas is sailing from Southampton during summer 2026.

The ship has been significantly updated through Royal Caribbean’s Amplified programme. Family highlights include The Perfect Storm waterslides, Splashaway Bay, a revamped pool deck, children’s and teens’ activities, a range of restaurants and evening entertainment.

Typical Southampton itineraries include:

  • Norwegian fjords
  • Northern Europe
  • Spain and France
  • Short European breaks
  • Longer sailings towards Portugal and the Canary Islands

That gives families some flexibility. You might choose a shorter cruise to see whether cruising suits you, or a longer itinerary with more sea days and warmer destinations.

Royal Caribbean: Freedom of the Seas in 2027

In 2027, Freedom of the Seas is scheduled to offer no-fly adventures from Southampton.

Freedom is in the same class as Liberty, so it offers a similarly active onboard experience. This can work particularly well for families with children or teenagers who want plenty to do between ports.

The 2027 programme is expected to include itineraries of around two to nine nights, covering destinations such as the Norwegian fjords, Northern Europe, Spain and Portugal.

For families, that variety matters. A seven-night fjords cruise may be ideal for a first cruise, while a longer Spain, Portugal and Canaries itinerary could suit families who want more sunshine and sea days.

MSC Meraviglia: new to Southampton in 2027

MSC Meraviglia is one of the most notable developments for UK cruise passengers.

According to MSC’s announcement, the ship will sail from Southampton from 18 May to 30 October 2027, with 19 itineraries ranging from six to 14 nights.

Routes are due to include:

  • Ibiza
  • Gibraltar
  • Tangier
  • The Canary Islands
  • Lisbon
  • Malaga
  • The Norwegian fjords
  • A Baltic Sea itinerary including Oslo, Fredericia and Copenhagen

Meraviglia is described as new to the UK rather than a newbuild ship. For families, it offers a large resort-style ship with pools, an outdoor waterpark, entertainment, children’s clubs, a Formula Racer, bowling and a flight simulator.

MSC Virtuosa remains an important option for Southampton departures during 2026, while MSC Preziosa is scheduled to offer an extended winter season into April 2027.

Which cabin is right for your family?

Choosing the right cabin is one of the details that can make a real difference to your experience.

The main options usually include:

Inside cabins

These are often the lowest-priced cabins and can be comfortable if you mainly plan to use the room for sleeping and changing.

However, they have no natural light. Some families like this because the room stays dark in the morning, while others prefer being able to see outside.

Oceanview cabins

Oceanview cabins provide a window or porthole. They can be a useful middle ground if you want natural light without the additional cost of a balcony.

Balcony cabins

A balcony gives you private outdoor space and can be lovely on scenic itineraries, especially in the fjords. It also gives you somewhere quiet to sit while children are resting.

Balcony access should always be considered carefully with younger children. I’ll make sure you understand the cabin layout and any relevant safety points before you decide.

Family cabins and connecting cabins

Family cabins, suites and connecting rooms are particularly popular during Easter, summer and October half-term. They can sell quickly because there are fewer suitable configurations than standard two-person cabins.

You may need:

  • A cabin that sleeps four
  • A family suite
  • Interconnecting cabins
  • A particular bed arrangement
  • A cabin close to lifts or family facilities
  • Separate sleeping space for older children

This is one reason I would not leave family cruise planning until the last minute if your dates are fixed. The ship may still have availability, but the cabin type that makes the holiday work best could have gone.

What is included in a no-fly cruise?

Your cruise fare will normally include your accommodation, main meals, entertainment and a range of onboard activities. Family ships may also include children’s clubs, pools, sports facilities and selected shows.

However, not everything is automatically included.

Depending on the cruise line and fare, you may need to budget separately for:

  • Drinks packages
  • Speciality restaurants
  • Shore excursions
  • Wi-Fi
  • Spa treatments
  • Some activities
  • Gratuities or service charges
  • Travel to Southampton
  • Parking or an overnight hotel

The details vary, so I always compare what is included rather than looking at the headline price alone. A fare that appears cheaper may not be the best value once the extras your family is likely to use are added.

When should you book a 2026/27 family cruise?

If you are travelling during a school holiday, I would recommend starting early.

The most popular combinations tend to be:

  • A family of four
  • A specific school-holiday week
  • A newer or recently refurbished ship
  • A balcony or family cabin
  • A particular dining time
  • A short transfer from the port or a convenient terminal

Booking early does not mean you need to have every detail decided immediately. It simply gives us more room to compare cabin categories, prices, itineraries and availability.

I can look at the options through more than 250 suppliers and narrow them down to the cruises that genuinely fit your family. You do not need to spend hours comparing every ship online.

How I can help you choose

Cruise planning can feel complicated when you are comparing ship sizes, cabin grades, dining arrangements, drinks packages and itineraries at the same time.

Through my cruise planning service, I’ll help you work through the decisions in a sensible order:

  1. We’ll discuss your family and dates.
I’ll ask about the children’s ages, your preferred school holiday, budget and how far you are comfortable travelling to Southampton.

  2. I’ll compare the right ships.
This might mean Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, MSC Meraviglia, Virtuosa or Preziosa, depending on what matters most to you.

  3. I’ll check the cabin carefully.
I’ll look at sleeping arrangements, location, size and whether the cabin is suitable for your family.

  4. I’ll explain what is included.
You’ll have a clearer view of the overall cost before making a decision.

  5. I’ll remain your point of contact.
You will deal directly with me from the first enquiry through to the booking and afterwards, rather than being passed between a call centre.

You can read more about family cruise packages and family holiday planning, or simply tell me what you have in mind. An approximate month, rough budget or even “we are not sure yet” is enough to begin.

A no-fly cruise from Southampton could be a calm, practical way to try cruising for the first time. And with new-to-the-UK ships, refreshed vessels and more family-friendly itineraries available in 2026/27, it is a good time to start exploring the possibilities.

A note on financial protection: the protection that applies depends on the holiday and travel services booked. I’ll explain the relevant arrangements before you make your booking. Simply Journeys is a member of Protected Trust Services, and flight-inclusive packages are covered by ATOL where an ATOL Certificate is issued. Further information is available in the Simply Journeys booking conditions.
