Your honeymoon is a wonderful trip to plan, but it can also feel like a lot of pressure.
You may be choosing a long-haul destination for the first time. Perhaps you are unsure how much to budget, when to travel or whether one hotel can really offer everything you both want. Then there are the flights, transfers, room choices and romantic extras to consider.
You do not need to have it all worked out before you begin.
As a luxury honeymoon planner in the UK, I help couples turn an approximate idea into a holiday that feels personal, comfortable and genuinely exciting. I’ll listen to what matters to you, narrow down the options and take care of the details that are easy to overlook.
Here is a simple place to start.
START WITH THE FEELING
Decide what you want the honeymoon to feel like
Before searching for hotels, talk about the kind of experience you both want.
Would you prefer:
- Complete relaxation on a beautiful beach?
- A mix of sightseeing, food and time by the pool?
- A private villa with a pool?
- A few days of adventure followed by quiet time?
- An adults-only resort where everything is taken care of?
- A city break combined with a beach stay?
There is no single definition of luxury. For one couple, it may mean a private pool and room service. For another, it could be a small boutique hotel, excellent local food and a well-planned itinerary.
You might also have different priorities. One of you may want to explore while the other is dreaming of uninterrupted time by the sea. That is perfectly normal. My role is to help find the right balance rather than assuming you want the same type of holiday as every other couple.
BUDGET FIRST
Set a comfortable budget, not an unrealistic one
A luxury honeymoon can cost very different amounts depending on the destination, travel dates, flight class, hotel and length of stay.
Rather than starting with a particular figure you have seen online, begin with a total budget that feels manageable for you both. Then consider what needs to be included:
- Flights
- Accommodation
- Transfers
- Meals and drinks
- Excursions and experiences
- Travel insurance
- Spa treatments and special dinners
- A little flexibility for upgrades or unexpected costs
It can help to separate your must-haves from your nice-to-haves.
For example, your priorities might be:
- Premium or business-class flights
- A private pool
- A specific room or villa category
- A shorter transfer after a long flight
- A private dinner
- A safari or sunset cruise
- A longer stay rather than a higher room category
Once I understand those priorities, I can compare the options properly. Sometimes spending more on the room is worthwhile. In other cases, a slightly simpler room frees up budget for a private excursion or a second destination.
There is no need to choose everything at once. A clear budget range is enough for me to begin researching.
TIMING MATTERS
Choose the travel season as carefully as the destination
Your wedding date may determine when you travel, but your destination still needs to suit that time of year.
Weather patterns, school holidays, local festivals and flight availability can all affect the experience and the price. A destination that looks perfect in one month may feel very different in another.
I’ll look at practical details such as:
- Typical weather for your exact travel dates
- Flight times and departure airports
- Seasonal prices
- Transfer times
- Whether the destination is likely to be busy
- How much time you will need to recover from travelling
For a popular luxury honeymoon, planning around nine to twelve months ahead usually gives you a better choice of flights, suites and villas. This is particularly helpful if you are travelling during a peak period or have your heart set on one specific resort.
That said, you do not need to panic if your wedding is sooner. I can still review what is available and explain where there may be flexibility.
FIND THE RIGHT DESTINATION
A few honeymoon ideas to consider
The best destination is not necessarily the most famous one. It is the place that fits your dates, budget and idea of a great trip.
Here are a few styles couples often consider.
Maldives
Ideal for couples who want privacy, warm water and time to properly switch off. Overwater villas and private-island resorts can create a memorable setting, although transfer arrangements and seaplane timings need to be considered carefully.
Mauritius or the Seychelles
These islands can offer beautiful beaches alongside restaurants, nature, water activities and cultural experiences. They may suit couples who want more to do than simply relax at one resort.
Greek islands or the Amalfi Coast
A good choice if you are drawn to sunshine, excellent food, beautiful views and a European atmosphere. Santorini, Crete, Corfu and the Amalfi Coast all offer different experiences, so the right base matters.
Safari and beach
For something more adventurous, you could combine a safari with time on the coast. This gives you the excitement of wildlife and landscapes followed by a slower beach stay. It is a wonderful option, but the order of the trip, internal flights and transfer times need careful planning.
City and beach
A few nights in a city such as Rome, Paris or Barcelona followed by time at the coast can give you a good mixture of culture and relaxation. This can work particularly well if you are not sure whether you want a completely quiet honeymoon.
You do not need to choose between these ideas immediately. I can help you compare them based on how long you have, how far you want to travel and what you want each day to feel like.
KEEP THE ITINERARY COMFORTABLE
More destinations do not always mean more luxury
It can be tempting to include three or four places because you want to see as much as possible. But changing hotels, taking internal flights and arranging transfers can quickly make a honeymoon feel like a project.
For many couples, one main destination or two carefully chosen stops is enough for a ten- to fourteen-night trip.
A useful structure might be:
- Arrive and settle in with a few quiet days.
- Explore or enjoy experiences while you have plenty of energy.
- Finish with relaxation at a beach resort or private villa.
I’ll also pay attention to the smaller logistics. A beautiful hotel may not be the right choice if reaching it involves a long road transfer after an overnight flight. A short domestic flight or private transfer might make the whole journey more comfortable.
Those details are part of the planning.
ADD THE ROMANTIC DETAILS
It is often the thoughtful touches that make the trip feel special
You do not need every day to be filled with expensive experiences. A few well-chosen extras can make the honeymoon feel personal without making the itinerary feel crowded.
Depending on the destination, you might consider:
- A private candlelit dinner
- A couples’ spa treatment
- A sunset sailing trip
- A private tour or cooking experience
- Champagne or a welcome arrangement in your room
- A room or suite upgrade
- A private pool or outdoor bath
- A professional couples’ photo session
- A special restaurant reservation
- A late check-out on your final day

I can ask the hotel to note that you are travelling for your honeymoon and check what arrangements or packages are available. It is important to remember that upgrades and special requests are not always guaranteed, but asking in advance gives the property the best opportunity to help.
The right extras should suit you. If you do not enjoy formal dinners, a private boat trip may be more meaningful. If you love food, I might focus on a chef’s table or local tasting experience instead.
WHY USE HONEYMOON PLANNING SERVICES?
You receive guidance without having to search through everything yourself
Planning a major trip online can leave you with hundreds of options and very little confidence about which one is actually right.
Working with a honeymoon specialist means you can begin with a conversation rather than a finished plan. You tell me:
- Your wedding and travel dates
- Your approximate budget
- Your preferred departure airport
- Places you have considered
- What you would like to avoid
- The details that would make the trip special
I’ll review the options, ask questions where needed and narrow the choice down to holidays that fit.
Through access to more than 250 suppliers, I can research a broad range of resorts, hotels and travel arrangements. You still make the final decision, but you do not have to compare every possibility alone.
I can also help with flights, room configurations, transfers, special occasions and the practical details that sit between booking and travelling. You deal directly with me from start to finish, rather than moving between a call centre and different departments.
That continuity can be especially reassuring when you are planning something as important as your honeymoon.
A SIMPLE HONEYMOON PLANNING TIMELINE
Take it one step at a time
Nine to twelve months before travelling
Set your budget, agree your travel window and begin comparing destinations. This is a good time to secure popular suites, villas and flight options.
Six to nine months before travelling
Confirm your destination and main accommodation. Check passport requirements and discuss any important travel arrangements.
Three to six months before travelling
Arrange private dinners, spa treatments, excursions and transfers. You may also want to book travel insurance at this stage.
One to three months before travelling
Review the full itinerary, confirm special requests and check that names and dates are correct on all documents.
Before you leave
Keep your booking information, insurance details and emergency contacts together. I’ll also be available to help with the arrangements made through me.

A HONEYMOON THAT FEELS LIKE YOURS
The most memorable honeymoon is not necessarily the most elaborate. It is the one that reflects how you both like to travel.
Perhaps that means a quiet villa, an active itinerary, a luxurious city hotel or a simple beach escape with one special dinner. You do not need to know the destination before starting the conversation.
Tell me your dates, budget and departure airport, along with anything you already know. Even “somewhere warm, peaceful and special after our wedding” is enough to begin.
I’ll help you work through the options and create a honeymoon you can look forward to with confidence.
A note about financial protection
The financial protection that applies depends on the travel arrangements you book. Where applicable, flight-inclusive packages may be protected under the ATOL scheme, and Simply Journeys works with Your Travel Consultant Ltd and Protected Trust Services. I’ll explain the relevant protection and provide the applicable information before payment. You can also review the Simply Journeys booking information and the Civil Aviation Authority website for further details.
